“Merry Christmas!”
“Bah, Humbug”
Published in 1843, just after the Industrial Revolution, when people moved in droves to the cities to work in the new factories, A Christmas Carol, in whichever is your favourite version, is a Christmas classic.
It is a popular misconception that Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol to bring attention to the plight of the poor children in the workhouses, and the inequalities between classes.
That is plainly wrong, Dickens actually wrote A Christmas Carol as a book of home moving tips.
Obviously, A Christmas Carol was written to help you move home more easily and cheaply.
“Bah Humbug” I hear you cry, but the evidence is as clear as a star-filled winter’s night.
Strap yourself into our sleigh as we take a closer look at the characters in A Christmas Carol and see what home moving tips they gift us this Christmas.
Ebeneezer Scrooge
Scrooge was actually a removal company owner.
Of course, he has to keep a close eye on finances, there are no huge profits to be made in the moving industry, but the real lesson to learn from Scrooge’s character is that he comes to the rescue of the Crachit Family.
The Crachit family was downsizing and moving to a cheaper part of the city. In an effort to save costs they were going to hire a cheap moving service, just a guy with a donkey and cart.
It would have been a cheap, but almost certainly a very stressful move, with the very real possibility that they could have been scammed.
Obviously, if things had not changed then there were dire consequences for the Crachit Family.
But Scrooge came in the nick of time and saved the day.
Of course, there are removal companies who will scrimp and save, cutting corners to give you a cheap price, but inevitably, your home moving experience will be much the worse for it.
There are many mistakes to avoid when moving home and a good removal company will help you move home in the most efficient and stress-free way possible.
Jacob Marley
Jacob Marley tried to move home himself.
He looks back and wishes he had done things differently, but it is too late for him, he can only show others the consequences of their decisions.
The weight of the chains around his body represents the stress and hardship that the home move caused him.
Trying to move home yourself is the most stressful, and often most costly way to move home.
The risk of damaging your items as you move them, the damage you could cause to your old or new home, any damage you cause to the hire van, and most importantly, the damage you could cause to yourself, is just not worth the risk.
And never underestimate the weight of the chains of stress. Moving home yourself can turn into a nightmare showing you the true meaning of a stressful home move.
As Jacob Marley said “I am here tonight to warn you, that you have yet a chance and hope of escaping my fate”

Bob Crachit
Bob Crachit is the removal team.
Although they work long hours, often into the night, they get on with the job day after day, come snow or rain.
They don’t earn big money, but they do a sometimes difficult and demanding job.
And people often forget that they do not just deal with the physical side of moving home. Moving home can be extremely emotional for those relocating, and the removal team is a part of that emotional experience.
A professional removal team is worth their weight in gold. They will know exactly how to overcome most home moving problems and will have you packed and moved efficiently and safely in no time.
Moving day should be a happy experience when a whole new chapter of your life is before you. Be happy and positive, and that will rub off on your removal team.
Tiny Tim
Although a small character in the book, Tiny Tim has a lot to teach us about moving home.
No matter what hardships he faces, whatever obstacles he comes across, he remains positive.
A positive attitude will help you get through moving day without any major dramas.
Moving home and fun are not often words used in the same sentence, but there is no reason why not.
The whole home moving experience can be a fun one with just a little imagination.
In How to Make Moving Home Fun we look at each aspect of your home move and give suggestions on how to bring some joy and happiness to the home moving process.
“There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humour.”
Mr Fezziwig
Mr. Fezziwig represents a person moving home.
Whilst he has to keep an eye on costs, he does what makes the most sense to ensure the home move is as stress-free and happy as possible.
In A Christmas Carol, Mr. Fezziwig puts kindness and generosity before profits. Yes, you could find cheap removal companies, or try to move home yourself, but it is kinder to yourself, those around you, and your precious possessions, to have your home move carried out by a professional removal team.
The lesson this character teaches us is: Hire a good removal company, they might cost a bit more, but your family will love you for it.
Ghost of Christmas Past
“I will not shut out the lessons they teach me.”
Ah, looking back at what has been, the power of hindsight.
Whilst we don’t have the Ghost of Christmas Past, we do have removal company reviews which allow us to understand how good or bad a removal company is.
Fake reviews are a sad fact of life, but if you know what to look for, and how to get the most out of reviews, then they are a great aid in finding a good removal company.

Ghost of Christmas Present
“Reflect upon your present blessings, of which everybody has many, not on your past misfortunes, of which we all have some”
Preparing to move home is tiring and stressful, but we should never lose sight that we are extremely lucky to be able to move home, and are being given the opportunity to make a better life for ourselves.
The Ghost of Christmas Present allows us to step back and see just how prepared we are for the upcoming relocation.
Just like those other wise men, we have 3 gifts for you which will help you prepare for a super organised home move.
#1 Home Moving Checklist and Calendar
No doubt you have an advent calendar, but you will also need a moving calendar, a schedule of what to do and when.
Your step-by-step home moving checklist and timeline will ensure nothing is missed in your preparation for your move.
#2 Home Moving Binder
A home moving binder keeps all your essential information in one place. Not only will it have all your home moving paperwork, but all the information that you need about your new home, things like where the water stop cock is, how to work the boiler, and which day to put out the bins.
The more information you have about your new home the easier to settle in it will be.
#3 Change of Address Checklist
It is easy to forget to change your delivery address on websites or store cards, for example, so we have created a comprehensive change of address checklist for you.
Notifying companies of your change of address will help prevent you from becoming a victim of identity theft, or your Christmas deliveries being sent to your old address.
Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come
Perhaps the ghost we fear the most is the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. Moving home is an unsettling time filled with uncertainties and trepidation.
If you are moving to a new area, then it will help you settle in quicker if you can make yourself as familiar with the new area as possible.
Do as much research as you can by joining community social media pages, exploring Street Map, and visiting the new area as often as possible before the move.
Take time to detach yourself emotionally from your old home, focus on all the great reasons why you are moving, and all the amazing memories this new home will help you create.
Saying goodbye to friends and family is never easy when moving away, but a Farewell Party will allow you to say face to face goodbyes and will help you all create a last fantastic memory in your old home.
Ensure that you have an unpacking schedule so that once you arrive in your new home you can start to surround yourself with familiar things which will help stave off relocation depression.
And finally, give yourself time to adjust to your new home and life. You are about to be taken out of your comfort zone into an unknown home and area, it will take time to transition and make your new place into the home you hope it will be.
