Rochester is a small historic city of roughly 30,000 people situated on the River Medway in Kent. The Grade I listed Rochester Cathedral is one of the city’s most treasured buildings and it is the seat for the Diocese of Rochester – the second oldest in Britain, following Canterbury. Interestingly, the diocese established a school in 604, The Kings School, which still operates in Rochester today. Another notable building in Rochester is Rochester Castle. The castle’s keep might be a later construction but it is one of the best-preserved examples in Europe. Rochester however, is probably most famous as it the setting (although often in a fictionalised form) for many of Charles Dickens’s novels, including Pickwick Papers and Great Expectations. Charles Dickens spent several years living near Rochester and the Guildhall Museum has a permanent exhibition dedicated to the author. As Rochester is a city with lots to offer residents, it is clearly a desirable place to live.
