- Urban City Stories
Moving to a new home can be a fun, exciting, apprehensive, and stressful experience, particularly for children. Everything they are familiar with, all that makes them feel safe and comfortable is about to change.
As adults we can rationalize why we are moving, we can make sense of what is happening and the reasons for those changes.
However, a child, young ones especially, may not understand what is happening, or why.
In a perfect world, you will have the right words to say, the time to be able to devote to your children’s needs, and have all the answers to their million and one relocation questions.
The unfortunate reality is that you may be neck-deep in packing boxes, chasing solicitors and conveyancers, and trying to organise a house move, all whilst juggling your usual day-to-day commitments.
We have written before about how to make moving home fun for kids, but those activities take time and energy that you may not have during this crazy busy period.
So we have scoured the internet to find some moving home games that not only will your child find super fun to play, but will help you explain to them exactly what will happen when you move home, and who knows, you may find them fun to play yourself.
Top 6 Home Relocation Games for Kids
These are all games that anyone can play on a smartphone. There are some great games on Xbox for example about moving home, but not everyone has an Xbox and if you do, you may have packed it away already.
Not all of the games we have chosen are specifically about moving home, but they are all home-related and will help your child to understand certain aspects of moving home.
So here is our pick of the best home moving games:
#1 The Big Moving Adventure
Created for Military families in the US who move frequently, this app was developed to help kids understand the moving process, how to cope with the move emotionally, how to say goodbye to friends, how to explore their new home and neighbourhood, and then how to develop new friendships in their new home town.
There is a parent section that explores these topics in more detail to help you explain and discuss the move with your children.
Using the characters from Sesame Street, this is a really useful and fun way for your children to learn to cope with moving home.
The game is interactive so that you can
- Customize the characters
- Choose which toys and games to pack into moving boxes
- Use emotions to show how the characters feel about moving home
- Upload photos of their old school, friends, bedroom, or home
- Explore the new home
- Unpack the moving boxes
- Meet new friends in your new neighbourhood

#5 My PlayHome
This is an extremely popular game with over 10 million downloads and has won numerous awards as one of the best apps for kids.
It is suitable for a wide age range, it is simple and engaging enough for a 2-year-old yet holds enough interest for an 8-year-old.
The game is a very realistic doll house, which is totally interactive and has great graphics. The attention to detail in the home is awesome, you can even do things like close curtains, or open drawers and cupboards.
All of the characters are interactive too, so you can cook, shower, eat, or sleep.
It would be a great game to teach your child about your new home, and how it will be so exciting for them to get a new bedroom or a garden for example.
You could show them how to put things away after you have unpacked in your new home, or how they can help bake cakes in your new kitchen.
This is a great play-anywhere game as you do not need to be online to play.
The main home and garden in the app is free but you need to pay to unlock access to all the other buildings in the app.
