How to Drain a Washing Machine for Moving

Be sure to keep pets and children out of harm’s way when moving a washing machine.
    • Have a bucket handy to drain the water supply hoses into
    • Lay an old towel on the floor to catch any spilled water
    • Disconnect the power supply and unplug the machine
    • Turn off the water supply valves
    • Disconnect each water supply hose and drain any excess water into the bucket

    • Place the supply hoses into the drum of the machine after wrapping them in old towels or blankets so that they do not get misplaced or damaged.

How to Prepare a Washing Machine for a Home Move

    • Thoroughly clean the machine inside and out paying particular attention to the rubber door seal which often can hold a residue amount of water.
    • Install washer drum locks (usually on the rear of the washing machine). If you have misplaced the bolts they can usually be purchased from the manufacturer. Note that the shipping bolts must be secured in place to prevent damage to the washing machine when it is moved. Do not move a washing machine without the drum securing bolts in place.
    • Secure the power cable so that you do not trip over it when moving the machine.
    • Cling wrapping the entire circumference of the machine will prevent the door from opening and will hold the power cable and drain hose securely in place.
    • Wrap the entire machine in thick blankets to prevent any damage when it is being moved.
    • Securely tape the blankets in position.
    • Position floor sliders under the feet of the machine to help slide the machine out
    • Your washing machine is now ready to be moved to your new home.

How to Set Up A Washing Machine in Your New Home

Ensure you measure the available space in your new home to make sure your washing machine will fit.
    • Important: Remember to remove the transit bolts before using the machine
  • Ensure the washing machine is level using the levelling feet
  • Make sure the washers are correctly seated in the water valve connections before reconnecting. You may consider replacing the hoses and connections if they are old or damaged.
  • Reconnect the drain hose ensuring there are no kinks in the pipe.
  • Plug back into the electricity ensuring that the plug and cable are in good condition before doing so.
  • Run a test cycle with detergent to make sure everything is working OK and to clean through the machine.
  • Top tip: If you have to store the washing machine in a garage or outhouse during the winter, whilst you are doing home improvements, for example, you can prevent the pipes and water pump from freeze damage by pouring car winter windscreen cleaner (with a minus 30 rating) into the water drainage hose. It will run back into the machine and protect it from freezing water damage.

Be sure to run a wash cycle before using the washing machine again to clean any residue from inside the machine.
