How can you make moving home easier and less stressful?
Well, one of the top tips for a successful home move is good communication between you and your chosen removal company.
The more information that you give your removal firm, the better their planning can be for your moving day.
And the better the plan, the less chance there is of anything going wrong, or the cost of your home move suddenly increasing because the removal firm did not know about such and such.
So what are the sort of things that you should tell your removal company about? What information do removal firms need to ensure a stress-free moving day and an easy home move?

Things to Tell Your Removal Company
- Do you have any items that require special packing requirements?
- Do you have items that require specialist moving equipment or skills?
- What items need disassembling and reassembling?
- What will you be moving yourself?
- How you will identify which moving box goes into which room
- Will you provide a copy of your floor plan for your new home
- What access issues there are at your new address
- Specific dates or times that must be adhered to
#1 Special Packing Requirements
Packing for a home move is a herculean task and many people opt to hire a full packing service from their removal company.
(If you want to know how you can make moving home easier or less stressful, this is the easy answer. Hire professional packers)
This ensures that your goods are not only properly packaged but you will save a considerable amount of time having professionals do it.
If you have particularly valuable artwork or fragile items that you intend to move then the removal firm must be made aware of this fact.
Often custom-made crates are produced to offer the maximum protection to antiques, precious collections, and artwork.
Good quality packing materials can soon add significantly to your moving costs so the removal company must be made aware of your requirements at the quoting stage so that they can factor in these extra costs.

#2 Items That Require Specialist Removal
Particularly large pieces of furniture, antiques, grandfather clocks and pianos are just a few of the items that may require specialist removal equipment or skills.
The removal company may even employ a specialist for moving such items, so you will want to make sure they are available on your move date. Additionally, they may need to have available specific tools or equipment to move such items.
#3 Things you Need Dismantling and Reassembling
For health and safety reasons most removal companies are unable to disconnect gas or hardwired electrical appliances, but they may offer a service to dismantle and reassemble furniture.
The removal company will have to have the correct tools and factor in the time required for this, so ensure that you identify any furniture such as beds that will require this service.
Note that it is not a good idea to disassemble Ikea-type furniture. They are not designed to be taken apart, and due to the materials they are often made from, they will not withstand the stresses of being moved.
Equally, they are relatively inexpensive to replace so weigh up whether the risk of taking them with you is worth it. For what they will cost to transport it may be more cost-effective to just replace them with new ones.

#4 Things you are Taking Yourself – What Things Should You Move Yourself?
There will certainly be some things you will want to travel with you to your new home, and others that must go with you because the removal firm is prohibited from carrying them, most often for health and safety reasons.
Items that you should move yourself include very high-value things such as jewellery and irreplaceable items, or important paperwork such as birth certificates.
For health and safety reasons your removal company may not be able to transport certain items such as
- Aerosol cans
- Weapons and ammunition
- Acids
- Motor oil
- Antifreeze
- Gasoline or kerosene
- Pesticides
- Fertilizers
- Propane tanks or yard equipment with fuel
- Fire extinguishers
- Car batteries
- Cleaning supplies
- Fireworks
- Alcohol
- Paint and paint thinners
- Perishable foods
- Pets
- Plants
But be sure to ask for a definite list from your removal company.
You will, of course, want to pack a moving day essentials box which contains everything you may need access to on moving day such as medication, food, water, and certain paperwork.

#5 How you Will Label the Moving Boxes
This is easily overlooked but is very important.
As part of your moving box labelling system, you need to identify easily which boxes are to be placed into which room.
You can buy different coloured labels or packing tape, or use different coloured marker pens. Then work out a system, for example, red marked boxes go into bedroom 1, Green goes into bedroom 2 etc.
Be sure to have spare labels or corresponding coloured tape so that you can attach it to the relevant door frame at the new home to make it easier for the removal team to identify what goes where.

#6 Provide a Floor Plan of Your New Home
Early on in your planning, you should create a floor plan for your new home.
This will enable you to determine which furniture will go where and what you will be unable to take with you. This gives you plenty of time to sell or donate the surplus items.
The floor plan can then be provided to the removal company so that they know exactly where to place each item of furniture in your new home.

#7 Access Issues
It will prevent any unnecessary delays or additional costs if you can provide as much detail as possible about the property you are moving into.
The floor plan will give the removal company plenty of information about the internal dimensions of your new home and problems they may encounter with stairways for example.
But it would be useful for the removal company:
- Are there any parking restrictions
- Will the removal company need a parking permit?
- Will you or the removal company arrange for parking to be available outside the new home?
- How far is it from the curbside to the front door?
- Are there any width restrictions on the road you will live on
- Are there any limitations to the time of day you can use the lift?
- Is there a service lift that can be used or no lift at all?
- How many flights of stairs are there?
No doubt the removal company will do their own investigations about the destination town and route, but it is better they know twice than not at all.
We would recommend that you provide this information in writing to your removal company via email. That way there can be no misunderstandings and you will both have copies of exactly what has been communicated.
Of course, there are still plenty of things that can wrong on moving day but the more your removal company knows about your home move, the better their planning and cost estimate will be.
This brings us to the start of a successful home move: getting a quote.
