Table of Contents

Out of all the home moving tasks that you need to do, many people would consider packing and cleaning as being the worst two.

But the trouble is they go together, you cannot properly clean without the packing having been completed.

So whilst you will almost certainly want to deep clean the home you are moving into, it is also good home moving etiquette to clean the home you are moving out of.

And if you are moving out of rented accommodation then you will definitely have to give the place a really good clean before moving out if you want to get your security deposit back.

So where do you start, and what is the best way to deep clean a home?

If you are looking for advice about specific items or rooms that you need to deep clean, then this week’s home moving blog is for you.

How to Prepare Your Home for a Deep Clean When Moving

Decluttering is your first task

Before you can thoroughly clean your home, and to save money on moving costs, declutter your home as much as possible.

Anything that is cheaper to replace than to pay to pack and move, and things that you no longer use or need, should all be sold, donated, or recycled.

It is worth creating a floor plan of your new home to ensure any furniture you intend to take actually fits in the available space.

Do this in advance of getting your in-home moving cost estimate so that the removal company knows exactly what they are quoting you to move.

If you are packing for your home move yourself, you may want to pack and clean a room at a time so that you can close the door and forget about that room.

Hiring professional packers will make your home move far less stressful and will take a far shorter time, but will also leave you less time to clean, as they tend to pack just before moving day.

But you could also consider having your things moved into storage, allowing you plenty of time to thoroughly clean your old and new home. It is very inexpensive to hire a storage unit and will allow you time to thoroughly disinfect your new home before all your things are moved in.

Where do I Start Deep Cleaning my House When Moving?

Don’t forget to give your garden a good tidy as well

Always start high up and work your way down to floor level within the house and within each room.

Work left to right in every room so that you know exactly what has been cleaned, and so there will be no risk of pushing dust onto an already cleaned surface.

As to which room you clean first this will depend upon the rooms you are packing first.

You may like to read: What to Pack First When Moving Home. In this guide, we suggest a packing order not only for individual items but by room as well.

When you get to your new home clean the rooms that you will be using straight away such as the bathroom, bedrooms, and kitchen.

Don’t forget to keep the route between the removal lorry and your home well-swept.

You don’t want unnecessary dirt being traipsed into your home.

Use floor covering where possible to protect your floors as the removal team moves in and out.

How to Clean a Whole House Quickly When Moving

If however, you have the luxury of having the house completely empty then there are fast ways to clean a home.

When cleaning an entire home most professional cleaners opt for the ‘task cleaning’ method.

This means that you complete each task, not each room.

So you dust the entire house first, spray the tiles in the bathroom, and then spray the tiles in the kitchen. Return to the bathroom and wipe them clean, then back to the kitchen and wipe clean.

The idea is that you can move faster between rooms, rather than keep swapping and changing tasks. You will walk more, but the process should be faster.

And to clean windows super quick use a window blade. They cost very little but will make cleaning so much faster and not leave your windows streaked.

Carry all of your cleaning supplies in a bucket so that you don’t need to keep going back to the cupboard to get them.

And when you do the final mop or vacuum through, start upstairs working your way down to, and out of, the front door.

You can do a thorough clean of the home before moving day so that on moving day it is just a case of a wipe-over rather than having to waste time doing a full deep clean.

And when you get to your new home, give the place a clean before you start to unpack.

Be sure to wear gloves when you first arrive in your new home until you are sure that you have thoroughly cleaned.

If you are short of time then perhaps you will clean the rooms that you will use straight away such as the bathroom, kitchen, and bedrooms.

When cleaning your new home dispose of the cleaning cloths in a sealed bag to prevent any chance of bacteria or viruses remaining in the home.

  • For heavily stained walls add a cup of distilled white vinegar to a bucket of warm water. There is no need to rinse after using this solution as vinegar does not leave any residue.

How to Clean Curtains When Moving Home

Have someone hold the ladder when cleaning windows

Warning: Always follow the care instructions on your curtains.

If you are taking your curtains with you when you move and they need dry cleaning, take them to the cleaners before you move. You won’t have to pay for packing and moving them then.

Here is a step-by-step guide to cleaning curtains:

  • Vacuum the curtains first, or after taking them down, run them through the tumble dryer to clean the dust off.
  • To stop the fabric being sucked into the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner use a soft brush attachment or a nylon stocking over the nozzle.
  • Measure the curtains as you may need to stretch the curtains back into shape after washing them.
  • Take down the curtains and remove the hooks and release the tape ties so that the curtains lay flat.
  • Wash one set of curtains at a time as they can become extremely heavy when wet and you may end up overloading your washing machine.
  • When hand washing curtains avoid wringing them as this may distort them.
  • When drying the curtains avoid the wet fabric becoming folded and touching.
  • If you are ironing the curtains do so whilst they are still damp.
  • You may also be able to hang the curtains whilst they are damp and steam them smooth
  • Lay the curtains out on a bed and retie the tapes to the original width.
  • Whilst the curtains are washing take the time to clean the curtain rails, poles, and valances.
  • When taking down and rehanging the curtains it is safer to have some help. Have someone hold the ladder and ideally, someone to take the weight of the curtain which makes it easier to unhook them from the rail.
  • Net curtains should be washed with a mild detergent on a gentle setting.
  • Rehang the nets when they are slightly damp so that they fall into shape.
  • You may need to iron the hems or use a steam iron to smooth them.
  • Velvet curtains can be cleaned with a slightly damp chamois cloth if they are not dirty enough to warrant getting them dry-cleaned.
  • Silk curtains should only be hand washed with great care.

If you are selling the curtains with the house or you are renting and the curtains were already there you may be able to get away with cleaning them without taking them down.

  • You may just be able to vacuum the dust from the curtains. If you need to use a ladder to reach the top of the curtains have someone hold the ladder steady for you.
  • A lint roller can be used to remove any fibres and dust that your vacuum has been unable to.
  • If your curtains are stained then you can hire a steam cleaner to clean them. Using a gentle setting, clean the curtains in small areas using vertical strokes.  (Be sure to check that it is safe to clean your curtains with steam)
  • You can use fabric deodorisers to get freshen up the curtain fabric.
  • And just by opening the windows, you will allow the curtains to be aired.
