Buying a house questions and answers
Question
What is the criteria for being considered a first time buyer? My partner previously owned a house, she then separated from her partner and he kept the house - her name was taken from the deed around a year and a half ago. Now we are buying together. Can we still be considered first time buyers or is a certain amount of time needed before we meet that criteria?
Answer
Hi Rui,
Unfortunately, your partner would not be considered a first time buyer, as she has previously bought, even if she no longer owns the property. This means that if you were buying together, you would not be at all eligible for the Stamp Duty exemption for first time buyers.
Look at our article if you would like any more information about the changes to Stamp Duty.
